SUNN O))) TO RELEASE METTA, BENEVOLENCE
BBC 6MUSIC : LIVE ON THE INVITATION OF MARY ANNE HOBBS

CD/DL Arrives November 26th, 2xLP Arriving on January 28th via Southern Lord — Pre-orders Available Now.

Tune into Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music to Hear an Excerpt of “Troubled Air” + Check Out a Teaser Below.

In late October 2019, following a successful UK tour ending in a sold-out concert at the mythical Roundhouse in London, SUNN O))) entered studio 4 of the BBC Maida Vale. On invitation to record a live session for Mary Anne Hobbs to be broadcast on Samhain via her excellent radio show on BBC6. To enter the legendary John Peel studios was to enter a temple of music and experimentation, liberty in ideas and sound.

The band was nearing the end of a long touring year around the Life Metal and Pyroclasts albums. SUNN O))) had developed the compositions extensively, embracing the formative concepts of the Life Metal album conceptually and emotionally, but actualised and evolved into vast, open and bright hyper-saturated arrangements. Particularly the pieces the band chose to perform on this recording: Troubled Air and Pyroclasts. The former enriched into a total aspect of the band’s ethos and form in many ways, and Pyroclasts had evolved to become all-inclusive radiation of O))). The radiation embraces collaboration and freedom of interpretation by each player, within a structural format of the massive monuments of sound and distortion which define SUNN O))).

Anna Von Hausswolff and her band had accompanied SUNN O))) on the UK leg, and Anna joined SUNN O))) in the studio on synths and with her tremendous voice on the Pyroclasts pieces.

2006 LIVE CD & T-SHIRT REISSUE IS A BENEFIT FOR JUSTIN BARTLETT’S CANCER FUND

ALL PROFITS GO DIRECTLY TO JUSTIN BARTLETT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION & SUPPORT.

In early 2006 SUNN O))) embarked on an extended European bus tour in support of their BLACK ONE album, together with our masters EARTH. Malefic/Xasthur (voice), Mark Deutrom (bass), Steve Moore (trombone), Tos (MOOG), Randall Dunn (FOH), Seldon Hunt (photo documentation) … and of course The Lord & SOMA (axes) comprised the geometry of that era of O))).

Through the chaos, mayhem and (mis)adventures, and multi-dimensionality of that incredible tour, the remarkable individuals in the tour party forged musical life bonds, friendships, creative peaks, destinies vanquished and traversed riffs and tones and bass intonated to most brutal edges. On 16 February 2006, the tour arrived at Alzette Kulturfabrik, Esch sur Alzette, Luxembourg and this distortion praising document was recorded by our sound master Randall Dunn. Dyan Carlson of EARTH joined us onstage for the horrifying piece “Reptile Lux”, of which only a handful of audience witnessed this representation of the evolved and eroded gems of BLACK ONE. A limited jewel case CD issued at the end of 2006 as a tour merchandise album for O)))’s subsequent tours in North America and marked the initial collaboration with our ally and illustrator Justin Bartlett, whom defined the ceremony with a portrait of a reposing corpse aided by fungus along her long return journey to the humus & other kingdoms.

Mr Barlett is presently in the midst of a battle with stage 4 cancer. We now offer a limited edition reissue of this black diamond to honour and benefit him. All profits of this release and the accompanying T-shirt will go directly to Mr Bartlett. Your purchase ensures that you contribute to helping him out in this challenging time and in the recovery to come. Thank you for considering this.

Samantha Keely Smith exhibition

Samantha Keeley Smith, the cover artist of SUNN O)))’s Life Metal and Pyroclasts albums, has an exhibition of her of recent paintings, both the psychological landscapes & portraits, is now on view at Momentum Gallery in Asheville, NC until May 31st. A rare opportunity to see her large scale, magnificent work in reality!

Samantha Keely Smith
22 February – 31 May 2021

For more info about the exhibition:
https://momentumgallery.com/exhibitions/40

The work I’m doing at the moment definitely has a feeling of some sort of landscape or place, but they have nothing to do with real places, they are emotional and psychological places. Light plays an important role in my work. Because the work addresses the contrast and connections between an internal psychological space and my daily reality, they often depict dualities of light versus dark and order versus chaos.” – Samantha Keely Smith

Samantha Keely Smith exhibition

Samantha Keely Smith’s paintings explore the dual worlds in which we exist: our inner lives and the changing world around us. The paintings represent the landscape of the psyche, the place where the conscious and unconscious meet, where outside forces and our own human nature collide as we grapple with our place in an ever-changing and reactive environment. While painting, Samantha intersperses traditional brushwork with pouring and staining, and uses solvents and scraping to break up the oil-painted surfaces. She makes use of accidental moments in this process to further explore ideas of control vs. chaos.

The portraits explore how memories evolve over time, are reconstructed with each remembrance, and are further distorted through the lens of our inner lives, ultimately coalescing into a fictional version of a person or event. The emphasis is on the psyche, and the unfixed nature of identity and personality, rather than portraying a particular person.

SUNN O))) Announces The Release Of Pyroclasts, Confirmed For Release Through Southern Lord On October 25th; Trailer Posted

SUNN O))) will release Pyroclasts through Southern Lord on October 25th. The album’s cover art, track listing, and a trailer have been issued. The Pyroclasts album is the result of a daily practice which was regularly performed each morning, or evening during the two week Life Metal sessions at Electrical Audio during July 2018, when all of the days musical participants would gather and work through a twelve-minute improvised modal drone at the start and or end of the day’s work. The piece performed was timed with a stopwatch and tracked to two-inch tape, it was an exercise and a chance to dig into a deep opening or closing of the day’s session in a deep musical way with all of the participants. To connect/reconnect, liberate the creative mind a bit and greet each other and the space through the practice of sound immersion. The players across the four pieces of Pyroclasts are Tim Midyett, Tos Nieuwenhuizen, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and as always, SUNN O)) founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. The music on Pyroclasts is inextricably woven to Life Metal. It exists on the very same tape reels, was explicitly recorded by Steve Albini. The brightness and vividness of that glorious session glares through these four tracks, the precision and radiance, prismatic lustrousness of the saturation, the elemental sculptural shapes, the abstract renderings. It is a sister, or perhaps a shadow album. Or perhaps the now apparent miasma or aether. But it also exists in a form of a pause, a time space which exist in between and around the compositional structures of SUNN O)))‘s titanic works. For the listener or recipient/participant there are deep rewards within the patience of pulling down the walls and letting the music feel and feel the music. To be immersed will reveal great detail and color, clarify image, encourage a depth of focus and stillness which may lead to a quite profound experience. Sitting inside the space of time. A deep form of elementalism, even atomism, and connection with presence moment, time and reality. SUNN O))) would invite our audience to consider these points of perception when experiencing and listening to PyroclastsSUNN O))) would also invite and encourage their audience to use Pyroclastsasa lens to review and re-experience the complexity of the Life Metal album, and even to interrupt its sequence with Pyroclasts. This elaboration can bring the astute listener both abyssal, hallowed rewards. Pyroclasts was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio on two-inch tape July 2018 and mastered by Matt Colton through all analogue AAA process at Metropolis July 2019. Four of Samantha Keely Smith’s incredible consciousness memory landscapes grace the album sleeve artwork. Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson would like to dedicate this album to the memories of Ron Guardipee, Kerstin Daley, and Scott Walker.

Gaîté Lyrique présente
SUNN O)))

LET THERE BE DRONE : une résidence Sunn O)))

31 Jan / Life Metal
01 Feb / Life Metal
02 Feb / Shoshin (初心)

La Gaîté Lyrique is delighted to welcome once again the mythical drone metal band Sunn O))) who will present a weekend residency of concerts this coming January 31st, February 1st, and February 2nd 2020, three concerts previously unseen in France.

“Let There Be Drone: a Sunn O))) residency” is a weekend programmed by and with the legendary Seattle band. Founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, accompanied by their collaborators, will present a weekend of concerts including two nights showcasing music from their monumental 2019 album “Life Metal” which has been highly acclaimed by fans and the press alike. Released April 2019, “Life Metal”, their proclamation in honour of the powers that be, the manifestation of saturation harmonics and escallating bliss of the power and the glory of sound, was recorded and mixed with Steve Albini in Electrical Audio Studios Chicago and is a rare album which has analogue production from start to finish.

To close the residency weekend, the band will present a duo minimalist guitar concert in their tradition of Shoshin (初心) on February 2nd. As a duet, Stephen O’Malley and Greg Andersen embark on a minimalist adventure with two guitars only. No synths, no vocals, no guests, no frills. Just two en, two guitars, ten full stacks and five fog machines melting time and space with sculptural masses of sound and saturation. Additionally the residency weekend will present associated programming of support acts, films and other aspects (which will be announced shortly).

While Sunn O)))’s albums are already adventures in themselves, with compositions that regularly exceed 15-minute durations, their concerts and their legendary wall of vintage amplification are intense and utterly unique experiences.

Stephen O’Malley described them as such for The Guardian:
“They are deeply powerful, but our intention is not to be destructive. It’s nourishment.”

Distortion High Masses with electric guitars that can be “trials” for the body, considering how immense the vibrational field becomes. A Sunn O))) concert inevitably leaves deep traces of its passage: so imagine a weekend in residence…

In November 2015 a concert scheduled at Yoyo as part of RBMA festival was forced to be canceled after the horrific acts of insane fundamentalist violence which struck Paris at the time. It has taken four years to bring the band back under the conditions necessary to present their full vision, production, sound and concert on stage in Paris, and Sunn O))) are pleased to be doing that together with our partners at Gaîté Lyrique once more.

Tickets :
1 night 35€

SUNNO))) Present New Life Metal Album Berlin Dates Include Listening Session and Two Live Shows

CTM Festival is proud to present the return of Sunn O))) to Berlin. This spring and summer 2019 they return to Berlin twice for the first time since 2015, in support of Life Metal, their first studio album in four years, which is to be released via Southern Lord for the first time on CD and vinyl (US) & vinyl (UK/EU) on 13th April via USA/UK/EU indie retail. The 26th April marks the official release date of the CD, digital and all other vinyl. Supporting both shows will be the singular Berlin guitarist Caspar Brötzmann. A series of his eternally grinding guitar works is currently being reissued by Southern Lord.

On 3 April 2019, Southern Lord (Sunn O)))’s home label run by Anderson) collaborates with Ideologic Organ Music (production company run by O’Malley) to present a listening session. O’Malley will play Sunn O)))’s new record over Berghain Säule’s intensive soundsystem, before closing the night with a set as DJ Caveman Skull. Showcasing the LP’s completely analogue production and signal path, which extends from the input of the band’s amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to the needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable, the evening presents Life Metal in its ideal listening setting.

The listening sessions precedes two Sunn O))) live shows on 30 and 31 July at Festsaal Kreuzberg, each of which will showcase a special performance, respectively.

03.04.2019 Berghain Säule | doors: 19:00 start: 20:00 Life Metal Listening Session with Stephen O’Malley & DJ-set by DJ Caveman Skull Presented with Southern Lord Records, Ideologic Organ, and Berghain.

Since Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley formed the band in 1998, they have developed a formidable reputation for their ability to create massive wave-pools of sound that are truly livid and powerful in magnitudes of amplitude, though rarely harsh. The sounds of Sunn O))) start low and intensify incrementally until they’ve transformed the entire listening area into a vibrating chamber teeming with elegant sustain. Adding to the timeless sensory overload of the Sunn O))) experience, the band members obscure themselves in clouds of thick fog, dressing in hooded robes, periodically thrusting guitars toward the sky as they lead us into the lowest frequencies imaginable.

Both Berlin shows will be supported by solo performances of Caspar Brötzmann, one of the most unique and innovative guitarists of the last forty years. With his Berlin-based trio Massaker, he evolved a whole new autonomous approach to writing rock songs, starting from sounds that were widely considered ornamental if not detrimental “sonic waste” such as shrieking feedback and droning overtones. Ultra-heavy riffs, unhinged beats, ominous tribal chants, and raw physical force are conjured by sinister, thrilling minds. Even today, as the art of noise has reached a level of sophistication that no one could have imagined thirty years ago, Caspar Brötzmann’s music is resoundingly singular. Starting with Brötzmann’s 1988 debut album The Tribe and its 1989 follow-up Black Axis, Southern Lord will reissue five of the remarkable guitarist’s albums throughout 2019.

At the very beginning of 2018, Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production. They were both determined to create new music and a new method of working in the studio, but without forgetting the accomplishments forged during their first two decades of existence.

After gathering twice last spring to write, conceptualise, and jam, in addition to holding a pre-production session at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studios together with T.O.S. on Moog, the band spent just over two weeks working at Chicago’s famed Electrical Audio Studio with Steve Albini at the helm. The results are astounding; the breadth of colour and sound are vast, impeccably recorded, and completely accurate in their representation. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used: they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for Sunn O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance-based, and more logical executive process.

The album took shape through collaborative explorations with Hildur Guðnadóttir, the renowned cellist, film music composer, and former member of the bands Múm, Pan Sonic, and Angel; Tim Midyett, a close friend of Greg and Stephen since the Seattle days of the early 90s (and member of Silkworm, Bottomless Pit and Mint Mile), who occupied a foundational role by tying earth to sound with wicked performances on aluminium neck bass and baritone guitars; and prolific new music composer Anthony Pateras, who arranged and recorded an incredible contribution of pipe organ for a piece titled “Troubled Air.”
